PRE-POW WOW EVENT

EARTHLODGE FUNDRAISING BREAKFAST

Friday, June 18 at 7:30am

at the Viaero Event Center at I-80 Exit 272, Kearney

Join us as we celebrate the gathering of these two tribes, each natives of Nebraska. The             Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma and Arikara Nation of North Dakota will come together again on the morning of June 18 with their friends from Nebraska and beyond. Please join us for this special meal and program, which will help the Arikara and the Pawnee build an earth lodge at the Archway.

$27 per seat (includes fees). Tickets available beginning April 15 through the VIAERO EVENT CENTER, www.kearneyevents.com, 308-338-8144.

Daily Schedule

Pow wow event parking will be at the Viaero Event Center. Free shuttles to the pow wow grounds at the Archway will be provided from 9:00am-6:00pm each day.

9:00am-6:00pm Archway Open for Touring

10:00am-4:00pm Vendors, Demostrations, Booths, and Exhibitors

1:00pm-3:30pm Dance and Drum Exhibition

In case of inclement weather the pow wow exhibition and exhibitors will be moved to the Viaero Event Center.

Dance And Drum Exhibition ( Featuring Pawnee, Arikara, & More)

Called "drums", singer and drummer groups from the Pawnee and Arikara tribes will pound out music while they sing their songs, with some of the songs dating back to when the two tribes were one on the Nebraska plains, at least 300 years ago. Drums from other tribes may also be joining this reunion celebration.

Native American & Local Cultural Exhibitors/ Vendors

 

" Dreams of Eagles", a group of Nebraska tribal members, will teach about Native American cultures through herbs, carvings, shawls, furs, star quilts, etc.

Other traditional skills demonstrations: hide tanning, tomahawk throwing, tipis, etc.

Civil War Camp: Learn about the important role that Pawnee Scouts played at Fort Kearny during and after the Civil War. Learn about the Arikara Scouts.

Local Exhibits/Vendors: Pawnee garden Tours, Pine Needle Basket Weavers, Central Nebraska Wood Carvers.

Native American fine arts and crafts for sale in the pow wow arena area.  A large array of artwork will be available for purchase from Pawnee and Arikara artists, and more!

Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA)

A Pow-Wow of Art: 19th Century Chiefs

May 29-June 27, 2010

In celebration of the various tribes who called Nebraska home in the 19th century, the Museum of Nebraska Art features a group of lithographic images from McKenney and Hall's History of the Indian Tribes of North America, published between 1836 and 1844.  These portraits of Chiefs who visited Washington, D.C. beginning in 1821 are often the only remaining portrayals of these tribal leaders.

Pony Express 150th Anniversary Celebration

The National Pony Express is holding a "re-ride" in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express.  Riders will be travelin the 1,966 mile route, and are scheduled to stop at Fort Kearny on June 20 at 5pm.  From 1-5pm Fort Kearny, an actual Pony Express stop, will celebrate this important anniversary with living history reenactors and skits, before the exchange of mail by horseback at approximately 5pm.
