Dancers of the Plains
Cultural Exhibition
June 15-16, 2012
The 4th Annual Dancers of the Plains welcomed the Southern Ponca of Oklahoma and the Northern Ponca of Nebraska!
__________________________________________________________________
The Ponca tribe lived in what is now Nebraska until their forced removal to Oklahoma in 1877.
After Chief Standing Bear returned to bury his son in 1879, some of the tribe was allowed to stay in Nebraska after his famous appeal to the Supreme Court. Today, the tribal members living in Nebraska are the Northern Ponca Tribe, and those in Oklahoma are the Southern Ponca.
